Skiing and Snowboarding Begins in New Mexico

Sipapu Breaks Records for Opening Weekend

November 22, 2010 — Vadito, NM: Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort launched New Mexico’s ski and snowboarding season in record-breaking fashion last weekend as the resort clenched the title of first resort to open in the state for the eighth consecutive year.

For New Mexico’s inaugural ski and snowboarding day, Sipapu broke attendance and terrain records: skier visits were up about 25 percent over last year’s Opening Day, and Sipapu had more terrain available than any other Opening Day in recent history, said general manager John Paul Bradley.

“As always, we are excited to give skiers and snowboarders the first turns of the season in New Mexico,” said Bradley. “I am incredibly proud of our crew at Sipapu for all they did to get our mountain ready – we’re looking forward to another fantastic season!”

This year marked only the second time Sipapu was able to provide top-to-bottom skiing and snowboarding during New Mexico’s first ski weekend – the resort offered guests access to Lift #1 for last year’s Opening Weekend, too.

Thanks to recent cold, arid temperatures, Sipapu was able to start making snow on October 25 – this marked the earliest snow making start in resort history and enabled mountain staff to open two lifts, three entire trails plus additional terrain last weekend.

Mountain crews will take advantage of the cold temperatures forecasted for the upcoming week, and they are working to open more routes down the mountain. Bradley expects to open more runs very soon, including Lower Bambi, Sassafrass, Midway and Paul’s Folly, which will provide guests additional beginner and intermediate terrain.

Sipapu will be open everyday during Thanksgiving week, from Saturday, November 20, through Sunday, November 28. The resort will re-open for the weekend on December 4-5, and daily operations begin Friday, December 10. Lifts are open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Early season lift tickets (available opening day through December 10) are $20 for adults (ages 21-59), and $15 for teens (ages 13-20), kids (ages 7-12) and seniors (ages 60-69). Fourth graders, kids ages six and younger, guests who are 40 years old, and seniors 70 or better ski and snowboard free everyday at Sipapu.

Following a season of record skier visits, Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort enters the 2010-2011 ski season as New Mexico’s fastest growing resort, yet visitors won’t have to wait in line for a lift. For complete information about Sipapu, visit www.SipapuNM.com.
