NM Ski Resorts Off to Best Start

After Latest Winter Storm, Resorts Dig Out and Prepare For Another Blast

Albuquerque, NM  (December 20, 2011)—The beginning of the 2011-2012 season has been extremely good to the New Mexico ski resorts blanketing them with new snow weekly.  Unlike December of 2010 when the snow storms were passing New Mexico by, this December will be a “December to remember”.
  • “17 new tails open today, 40” snow depth, 12 inches new in the past 24 hours”
  • “100% of the Mountain open, 47” snow depth, 11 inches in the past 24 hours”
  • “95% of the Mountain open, 45” snow depth, 7 inches in the past 24 hours”
  • “ All lifts and all trails open, 46” snow depth, 4 inches in the past 24 hours”
  • “Ski Area opens one week ahead of projected opening”
These are just some of the daily snow reports coming from ski areas around the state.  All resorts from Ski Apache in the south to Red River in the north have reported excellent skiing conditions. The new snow fall continue to improve the already great conditions. This is a huge boom for tourism in New Mexico as skiers from around the west flock to the area for the best early ski conditions the state has seen in years

“We feel extremely blessed this year having great snow while many parts of the country are struggling”.  Says George Brooks Executive Director Ski New Mexico
“The excellent early snow conditions have set us up for a very Merry Christmas”

Snow fall amounts range from 40 inches in southern NM to 105 inches in northern NM.  The number of visitors, year to date is up from 15% to 100%.  There are still a few reservations to be had at Christmas at a few resorts, but they are going fast.

“Monday’s storm really put us over the top as we already had a great base. The additional foot of snow has allowed us to open all of our terrain,” states Dave Dekema, director of marketing for Angel Fire Resort and Ski New Mexico board member. “With another storm closing in it’s only going to get better.”

A storm coming in Thursday night and Friday is expected to bring another round of cold temperatures and heavy mountain snow just in time for a white Christmas.

New this season Ski New Mexico Snow Reports will include daily video clips of the skiing conditions. Please visit www.skinewmexico.com and click on the Daily Video You Tube.  Our goal; this year is not only to report the number of inches of snow but also show you the skiing conditions.
