Peak Experience

Just a 30-minute drive from Albuquerque, or a 2.7 mile ride up the world’s longest aerial tramway, Sandia Peak boasts some of the best cruising terrain in New Mexico.

During the winter months, skiers, snowboarders and other winter sports enthusiasts can take the tram from the northeast side of Albuquerque, spend the day on the slopes, then return to Albuquerque via the tram. Considered the longest aerial tramway in the world, the 2.7- mile ride sails over deep canyons and mountainous terrain. The view from the top encompasses the Rio Grande Valley, Sandia foothills and other far-off parts of New Mexico. However, skiers and riders needing rental equipment and lessons must drive to the base area where the Rental Shop, Snow Sports School and Double Eagle II Day Lodge are located.

Sandia Peak has the longest
cruising terrain in New Mexico.
The ski area is located on the east face of the Sandia Mountain range overlooking the Estancia Valley. It has a vertical drop of 1,700 feet, 30 runs and 200 skiable acres. Sandia Peak boasts four double chairlifts with one double suited for beginners and one “Mitey Mite” surface lift at the Children’s Ski School. And many cross-country skiers and snowshoe enthusiasts either use the tram or drive up to the adjacent Cibola National Forest.

Sandia Peak has the longest cruising terrain in New Mexico—more than two and a half miles. The resort also appeals to the local freestyle crowd. The Scrapyard Terrain Park has funboxes, rails and jumps for beginner to intermediate skiers and boarders. The Wintermill Sports Shop at the base area sells logo merchandise and other essentials, and the rental shop offers ski and snowboarding equipment.

Sandia’s Snow Sports School has Professional Ski Instructors of America certified teachers who conduct full and half-day ski and snowboard lessons. The Double Eagle II Café serves breakfast, lunch and snacks.

If you’re looking for great views and perfect powder, close to the cultural activities and transportation of a major city, consider Sandia Peak. It’s beautiful, accessible, and full of winter adventure options.
