Old West Burro Street is home to souvenirs, specialty shops, diners, cafes, antiques, a salon and historic landmarks.
Above Stress Level
Tucked away in the mountains of southern New Mexico, Cloudcroft sits at a cool 9,000 feet elevation — this welcoming community is aptly named.
Established in 1899 by the owners of the El Paso and Northeastern Railroad as a resort haven, Cloudcroft maintains its oldwest charm. Take a walk down historic Burro Street and you’ll find a bounty of boutiques featuring the work of local craftsmen and
artists, all in an authentic western town. Tucked in the woods are quaint cabins and lodging establishments. Go rustic with a one-room cabin, or elegant at the 100-year-old Lodge Resort and Spa — an historic setting offering top-class amenities.
Cloudcroft opens its arms to thousands of visitors annually and the calendar is sprinkled with special events. From the annual Mardi Gras to Lumberjack Day, there’s always something to see and do.
Surrounded by the Lincoln National Forest, visitors come year-round to enjoy outdoor activities. The snow is perfect for tubing, sledding, skiing and snowboarding, snowshoeing and ice skating.
You can strap on a pair of skis and hit one of the southernmost ski areas in the U.S. Since 1963, Ski Cloudcroft specializes in a relaxed atmosphere, beautiful scenery, and great skiing. Ski Cloudcroft does not have snowmaking so ski days are dependent upon Mother Nature — best to call first. When the lifts open, it offers beginner lessons to expert trails. The area also offers a rental shop featuring the latest Fischer shaped skis, a retail shop, and the famous Mustard’s Last Stand restaurant.
With over 1.2 million acres of pristine forest, the Lincoln National Forest also offers cross-country skiing, winter hiking and some of the best hunting in New Mexico. Professional outfitters are available to help with your hunting needs.
Cloudcroft is internationally known for astronomy, home to Sunspot Solar Observatory (
nsosp.nso.edu/pr) and Apache Point Observatory (
www.apo.nmsu.edu). The amazing scenery and cool mountain breezes found in the town also inspire the creative juices of many visitors. Local artists and photographers have ample subject matter to work with in the Sacramento Mountains.
